Trabzon - Turkey Trabzon is a city on the Black Sea coast of north-eastern Turkey as well as being the capital of the Trabzon Province. Trabzon contains tourist attractions, many of which date back to the eras of the ancient empires that once existed in the region. In the city itself, tourists can find shops, cafes and restaurants surrounding the Meydan - a square in the center of the city which includes a tea garden. The Hagia Sophia (Turkish: Ayasofya Müzesi) is a beautiful Byzantine church which is probably the most important tourist attraction in Trabzon. The ruins of Trabzon Castle are visible in the town but cannot be visited as they are situated in a military zone with the outside wall of the castle now serving as the back wall of a military structure. The Atatürk Köşkü is villa that was built in 1890 for a local Greek merchant. In 1924 Mustafa Kemal Atatürk stayed in the villa during his first formal visit to Trabzon and stayed there again in 1937. It houses his rooms of the period and acts as a shrine to the memory of the founder, father and first President of the Republic of Turkey.

Boztepe Park is a small park and tea garden on the hills above Trabzon that has an excellent view of most of the entire city. Trabzon has a typical Black Sea climate with above average rainfall year round. Summers are warm and humid, with the average maximum temperature at about 27°C or 81°F during August. Winters are cool and damp with the lowest average minimum temperature being about 5°C or 41°F in January. Precipitation is heaviest in autumn and spring with snowfall often being common between the months of December and March. The water temperature, as in the rest of the Black Sea coastal region, is always cool and fluctuates between 8°C or 46°F and 20°C or 68°F most of the year.
